It's easy to enjoy the outdoors and an active lifestyle on Madison’s near west side, where the commuter bike path is popular among runners, roller-bladers and bikers, many of whom use the path to commute to and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The University of Wisconsin Arboretum, a 1,200 acre nature preserve, is a favorite with bikers and nature-lovers alike, while the boat rental at Lake Wingra is popular throughout the summer. The near west side of Madison is home to the Henry Vilas Zoo and some wonderful parks, including Vilas, Hoyt, Wingra and Westmorland Parks. Monroe Street is a popular destination with an eclectic mix of locally-owned shops, while Hilldale Mall offers a wide selection of more upscale stores and restaurants.
