More Vilas Real Estate Information
The Vilas neighborhood is bounded by Monroe Street and Regent Street to the north, Vilas Park to the south, Randall Ave to the east, and Edgewood College to the west. This area includes the Wingra Park Historic District which was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. The Madison Landmarks Commission provides an in depth walking tour of the area and an excellent introduction to the American Craftsman, Bungalow, and Prairie style homes that line the streets of the neighborhood.
The properties in this area include many elements that are rarely found in more contemporary homes. One example is the large number of properties that prominently feature the "old-fashioned front porch". Most Vilas houses are only a short walk away from the Monroe Street corridor, which offers a unique variety of restaurants, cafes, shops, and local small businesses. Monroe Street is also home to Trader Joe's, a grocery store that is favored by the residents here and in neighboring Dudgeon-Monroe.
Vilas Park
There is no park in Madison that is quite like Vilas Park. On any given day you'll find scores of Madisonians flocking to the neighborhood to take in the beauty of the surrounding area. Swimming, picnicking, biking, and roller-blading are popular activities during the warmer months, while ice skating is popular in the winter. The Vilas Zoo is open year-round and admission is always free. Two other iconic Madison parks - Wingra Park and the UW Arboretum - are also within walking distance of the neighborhood.
Vilas Schools
Vilas properties are zoned to the Madison West High School attendance area, which includes the Franklin/Randall elementary schools and Hamilton Middle School. Edgewood, a private school, is conveniently located on the western edge of the neighborhood.
