The Marquette/Williamson Street real estate market is located east of Blair Street between East Washington Avenue to the north and Lake Monona to the south. Williamson Street (aka "Willy Street") runs east and west through the neighborhood and serves as both the literal and figurative heart of the community. Willy Street offers a unique, urban vibe like no other area in Madison. Here you'll find an eclectic collection of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and locally run businesses in a pedestrian and bike-friendly setting.
The properties in the Marquette/Williamson Street area offer turn-of-the-century architecture and old world craftsmanship that can't be found in the homes of today. Some of the buildings in the neighborhood even date back to the late 1800s. Because of this, many Marquette/Willy Street homes belong to either locally or nationally designated historic districts. In addition to single family dwellings, the Williamson Street area offers a good inventory of multifamily income properties. This part of Madison also features an impressive selection of waterfront homes with southern-exposure views of Lake Monona. This is an area with modestly-sized lots and a high degree of urban density, so no matter where you live in the Marquette neighborhood you're never more than a short walk away from Williamson Street, Lake Monona, or a local park.
This neighborhood is home to several urban parks, including B.B. Clarke Beach on the west end of the neighborhood. Several other spots within the neighborhood offer access to Lake Monona, including Yahara Place Park on the eastern edge. Many other parks and green spaces dot the area, including Orton Park, Kerr-McGee Triangle, Morrison Park, Willy Street Park, and the Yahara River Parkway. The Capital City State Trail winds its way through the area, as well. This bike-friendly location makes it easy to bike to downtown Madison, Olbrich Gardens, Tenney Park, or James Madison Park. From the Marquette neighborhood you can even take your ride all the way around the lake.
The Marquette Neighborhood Association is the oldest community association in all of Madison. Founded in 1969, MNA may also be the city's most active community-oriented group. Thanks to the work of MNA, the American Planning Association recently placed the Marquette Neighborhood on its 2013 list of top 10 American neighborhoods. MNA sponsors scores of community-oriented events throughout the year. These include the annual Chili Dinner, Waterfront Festival, Orton Park Festival, and the Willy Street Fair. Check out the MNA website to learn much more about this incredibly active community group.
Properties in the Williamson Street area are zoned to East High School, O'Keeffe Middle School, Lapham Elementary (grades K-2), and Marquette Elementary (grades 3-5). Both O'Keefe Middle School and Marquette Elementary are located within the boundaries of the neighborhood.
