Our housing start update provides an objective view of the latest home-building trends in Dane County, Wisconsin. Our report tracks the number of new construction building permits issued for duplexes and single family homes. The statistics below provide a forward-looking view of the housing market in the greater Madison area. When building permits rise, we expect mortgage applications and home sales to increase in the months ahead. When building permits fall, we expect to see fewer applications and fewer sales.

Dane County Housing Start Trends - April, 2021
A total of 127 Dane County building permits were initiated during the month of April, which was up from last year's COVID market but still well below historical highs.
Year-to-date, there have been 476 Dane County housing starts through the month of April, which is the highest year-to-date total since 2006, but still well below historical highs.
On an annual basis, a total of 1,279 Dane County building permits were issued in 2020, which was relatively flat when compared to the previous 7 years.
