Our housing start update provides an objective view of the latest home-building trends in Dane County, Wisconsin. Our report tracks the number of new construction building permits issued for duplexes and single family homes. The statistics below provide a forward-looking view of the housing market in the greater Madison area. When building permits rise, we expect mortgage applications and home sales to increase in the months ahead. When building permits fall, we expect to see fewer applications and fewer sales.

Dane County Housing Start Trends - October, 2018
A total of 100 Dane County building permits were initiated during the month of October, a slight increase from the 96 building permits issued in October of 2017.
Year-to-date, there have been 1,060 Dane County housing starts through the month of October, which is roughly even with the year-to-date total from each of the previous two years.
On an annual basis, a total of 1,258 Dane County building permits were issued in 2017, essentially even with the year before. Housing starts ended the year about 50% below the levels from the peak building years (2001 - 2005).
