If there is one thing that’s always appealed to me about the summer, it's fireworks. Maybe it started as a little kid with an affinity for loud noises, bright lights, and surprises. Or growing up in the metro Detroit area where we take the yearly firework celebration, launched from barges in the Detroit River, pretty seriously. I’d like to think that my tastes have matured as I’ve aged but truly, with Shake the Lake this Saturday and the prospect of watching colorful explosions reflect off of beautiful Lake Monona, I’m feeling just as novel as I was the first time I headed to the roof of a parking structure in downtown Detroit.
Madison’s summers were something that were talked up to me since I began considering my move here. So far, although not officially started until this past Monday, it has not disappointed. I got my first real view of Jupiter last Wednesday at the Washburn Observatory, toured the Olbrich Gardens, scored some major deals at the Dane County Farmer’s Market, took advantage of the SummerPalooza event at the Madison Children’s Museum with free admissions for myself and my nephews, attended a concert at Memorial Union, and tagged along on a leg of the historic architectural tour in my neighborhood of Mansion Hill.
This Saturday is shaping up to be another great weekend in my first month as a Madison resident, and fireworks are far from the only appealing event. I will be one of 11,000+ participants in Madison’s 5k Bubble Run which is taking place near the Alliant Energy Center from 8am-noon. The Shake the Lake is playing host to the Mad Rollin’ Dolls roller derby team at 6pm, The Human Cannonball at 7:30, several musical acts headlining with Guster at 8:30 and capped by the fireworks at 10. All together this should shape up to be a perfect kickoff to this Madison summer. You can check the full event schedule and lineup here. Hope to see you there!
With so much to look forward to this summer I couldn’t possibly fit it all into this one article, so I suppose a summer event series would be fitting.
This month’s events I’m most excited for:
June 24th: Live on King Street – Summer Concert Series
June 25th: Bubble Run 8am – 12 pm, Shake the Lake 4 pm – 11 pm
June 30th: Concerts on the Rooftop
July 14th – 31st: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) – University Theater
July 15th – 17th: Maxwell Street Days 8am – 6pm (10-5 Sunday)
July 28th: Motion City Soundtrack – Barrymore Theatre
I hope to be able to write about a ton of events throughout the summer. If there is anything you’re excited to attend I’d love to hear about it. Contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and happy summer to you! ;)
