Madison Parks Offer Year Round Fun

We had some beautiful snow this week. If you haven't been out yet, this weekend is the perfect chance to enjoy the winter weather at one of Madison's many city parks.

The Parks Department provides a wide range of activities to be enjoyed all season. There are 12 outdoor ice skating rinks, 22 miles of cross-country skiing trails (only Elver Park is open now, due to the lack of a solid snow base), 10 parks with hills recommended for sledding, a snow mini-golf coursea winter disc-golf course, and additional trails for snow-shoeing, hiking and just enjoying the beauty of winter in Wisconsin.

Tonight, the City of Madison Parks Department kicks off its Groove and Glide party series. The ice skating fun travels around town, with a stop at each rink through the winter. The first one will be at Westmorland Park, on Madison's near west side. This park has restrooms, but is the only one in the Groove and Glide series that will not include skate rentals or concessions. Madison ice-skating rinks are all open, but the Groove and Glide Party makes it even more fun, with lights, music and games hosted by the parks department. Groove and Glide offers free admission, and runs from 6-9 p.m. on Friday nights.

Future Groove and Glide events are scheduled at these Madison Parks, and will offer skate rentals and concessions:

Friday, January 26, 2018
Tenney Park, 402 Thornton Ave.

Friday, February 9, 2018
Elver Park, 1250 McKenna Blvd.

Friday, February 16, 2018
Vilas Park, 1602 Vilas Park Road

While you're outdoors, enjoying the weather, there's also an opportunity to share with others in need. The Community Action Coalition of South Central Wisconsin, in partnership with Madison Parks, is hosting a Winter Clothing Drive at the parks. New and gently used winter clothing (coats, snowpants, hats, gloves, and boots) can be brought to the warming shelters of parks. A schedule and more info on drop-off locations can be found here.

Don't let winter keep you indoors. There are plenty of outdoor events to enjoy in Madison!
