Holiday cheer as December nears

With Christmas music taking over the radio before Thanksgiving and many trees and lights up shortly thereafter, it's safe to say the holiday season is here. Many Dane County communities are already planning wintry events for the first part of December, including these listed below - with or without snow. Be sure to check out the websites for detailed schedules and associated costs.

Cambridge Classic Christmas
When: November 30-December 2
Where: Downtown Cambridge
What: Santa and Mrs. Claus come to Cambridge in time for the community Christmas tree lighting Friday evening. Saturday features horse drawn wagon rides, caroling, shopping, and crafts, and Sunday morning is breakfast with Santa.

Victorian Holiday Weekend
When: November 29-December 2
Where: Downtown Stoughton
What: Enjoy a library book sale, holiday light show, fire truck parade, tour of homes, face painting and children's activities, artisan market, craft and bake sale, and horse drawn carriage rides. There will be performances by the Stoughton High School Madrigal Singers, Stoughton Village Players, and Stoughton Opera House.

A Madison Symphony Christmas
When: 7:30 p.m. November 29, 8 p.m. December 1, 2:30 p.m. December 2
Where: Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State St., Madison
What: Gospel, youth, and symphony choirs join internationally-acclaimed opera singers for an annual Christmas concert. Come 45 minutes before show time to sing carols with the Madison Symphony Chorus. Tickets range from $18-$93.

55th Annual Hoofers Ski and Snowboard Resale
When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. December 1 and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. December 2
Where: Varsity Hall, Union South, 1308 W. Dayton St., Madison
What: Find great deals on winter gear such as skis, snowboards, and apparel at the largest ski swap in the Midwest. Ski and snowboard sharpening and waxing also available. Proceeds benefit Hoofers teams and trips.

Olbrich's Holiday Express
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. December 1-31
Where: Olbrich Botanical Gardens, 3330 Atwood Ave., Madison
What: The holidays are in motion at Olbrich, where you can watch large-scale model trains move through beautiful poinsettias and evergreen. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-12, and free for members and children 2 and under.

Get Festive with Agora
When: 4-8 p.m. December 6
Where: Agora at Fitchburg Center, 5500 E. Cheryl Pkwy., Fitchburg
What: Lights will take center stage at the Agora, where you can listen to holiday music, go for a carriage ride, watch an outdoor movie, and check out local retailers. There will also be a photo booth, prizes, and complimentary appetizers and desserts.
