Downtown and local parks feature family festivals early June

Summer vacation is still a week away for many kids, but they can start having fun with family-friendly festivals this weekend. There will be local bike rides, jazz music, carnivals, and even classic cars and cows to see near Capitol Square in early June. Our team will be at the Parks & Trails Unite Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, so be sure to stop by next to the “Science is Fun” booth.

Festa Italia
When: June 1-3 (4:30-11 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday)
Where: McKee Farms Park, 2930 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg
Admission: $3 per day (kids under 12 are free)
Activities: Pasta dinner and spaghetti-eating contests, bocce tournament, Italian dancers and musicians, raffle, face painting, balloon sculptures, magic show, cooking demo, Greenbush videos and stories.

Verona Hometown Days
When: June 1-3 (5 p.m. to midnight Friday, 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Sunday)
Where: Hometown USA Festival Park, 451 E. Verona Ave., Verona
Admission: Free
Activities: Carnival, live music, petting farm, magic show, Friday night fireworks, Saturday car show and pancake breakfast, Sunday fun run and parade.

Isthmus Jazz Festival
When: June 1-10
Where: Memorial Union Terrace and downtown Madison
Admission: Varies
Activities: 10-day festival with multiple shows throughout the city; June 2 and 9 will feature Jazz on the Terrace; evening of June 8 is Strollin' State Street.

Cows on the Concourse
When: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 2
Where: 100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Madison
Admission: Free
Activities: Kicks off June Dairy Month with two cows petting areas, grilled cheese and milk, scavenger hunt, athletic stations, education zone.

Cars on State Classic Car Show
When: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2
Where: State Street, Madison
Admission: Free
Activities: Classic car enthusiasts share history and characteristics of their models along six blocks downtown.

Parks & Trails Unite Festival
When: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 2
Where: Lake Farm County Park, Madison, and McDaniel Park, McFarland
Admission: Free
Activities: Pontoon and kayak rides, nature walks, meet animals, rock climbing wall, disc golf, bouncy house, circus activities and games, bike safety, live music, food carts, biergarten, raffle.

Ride the Drive
When: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 3
Where: Law Park, Olin Park, Brittingham Park, Madison
Admission: Free
Activities: Part of John Nolen Drive closed to traffic; walk or bike to parks for food, fun, entertainment, vendors.

The Pursuit of Happiness Session
When: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 3
Where: McPike Park (Central Park), 202 S. Ingersoll St., Madison
Admission: Free
Activities: Live music, dance, comedy shows; food and drink vendors; prelude to the six Central Park Sessions that will be held the first three Wednesday and Thursday evenings of August.
