It's a grueling test of athleticism, physical fitness and endurance. The Reebok CrossFit Games attracts competitors from around the globe. Now, after 10 years of games in California, the CrossFit Games have moved to Madison. The games open today at Alliant Energy Center, and feature the top 40 male and the top 40 female athletes from around the world. In addition, a masters competition and a teen competition have opened the doors to more competitors.

It seems appropriate for Madison to host the CrossFit Games. Fitbit did a study of the fitness information recorded by its users. After measuring all the data, it named Madison the fittest city in the United States.  Livability ranked it #3 in its list of top 10 healthiest cities. Other sources have consistently applauded Madison for its access to recreation, large variety of gym options, easy access to farmers' markets and excellent health care. All of this data fits nicely within the idea behind CrossFit. This exercise method measures overall fitness, and incorporates all kinds of exercises and movements into its system. It also is designed to allow all ages to participate. The CrossFit games will include athletes as young as 14, and events also include athletes over the age of 65. It's a popular model. Madison, alone, is home to at least 10 CrossFit locations.

Hosting the CrossFit Games means significant visibility for the "Fit City." National television crews will be broadcasting the event. Spectators and competitors come from all over the world. The Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that the games will bring $7 million to the city. And, in addition to the economic benefits, it offers another local entertainment option. The CrossFit grounds (at the Alliant Energy Center), will include a beer garden, spectator areas and a large vendor pavilion featuring fitness equipment, plans, diet options and more.

The games go through Sunday, August 6. Tickets can be purchased at Alliant Energy Center to view the events. You can watch some of the world's best athletes swim, sprint, lift weights and do other amazing feats as they compete to win at the CrossFit Games. A full list of the events can be found here
